Senior Azure Data Engineer (SQL Server)

We are looking for a senior, experienced Azure Data Engineer with strong SQL Server expertise to design and implement a medallion lakehouse architecture for a multitenant SaaS platform. This is a 3 month engagement with the possibility of extension. This is not a hands on coding role. We are looking for an engineer or architect who can operate independently at a senior level, guide architecture decisions, and use AI tools to drive implementation rather than writing code directly.

About the Project:

Our client operates a multitenant SaaS platform and has not yet finalized the specific Azure stack, most likely Microsoft OneLake and Fabric. Rather than requiring the stack to be pre decided, we are looking for someone experienced enough to have worked across most of the realistic options and confident enough to guide that decision. The team is also integrating LLMs with existing data schemas to power AI driven reporting, so day to day work includes formulating effective requests to LLMs and judging whether the responses returned are accurate or hallucinated.

Responsibilities:

• Designing and implementing bronze, silver, and gold data layers using medallion architecture on Azure;
• Designing and implementing data transformation pipelines for a multitenant SaaS platform;
• Guiding stack and architecture decisions where the technical approach is not yet finalized;
• Tuning SQL Server performance and providing architectural guidance and support to engineering teams;
• Formulating structured requests to LLMs to integrate schemas for AI driven reporting, and assessing whether responses are accurate or hallucinated;
• Using AI tools to drive implementation, rather than relying primarily on manual coding.

Qualifications:

• Senior level experience designing and implementing medallion lakehouse architectures on Azure, with exposure across multiple platforms (Fabric, Synapse, Databricks, or similar) sufficient to advise on stack choices;
• Strong SQL Server tuning and architecture experience;
• Comfortable operating as an architect and technical advisor at a senior level, not as a primarily hands on coder;
• Demonstrated, current experience using AI tools in engineering work, with a clear point of view on where they help and where they fail;
• Practical experience integrating LLMs with structured data schemas, including the judgment to recognize hallucinated or unreliable output;
• Excellent communication skills in English.
