About the project

We are seeking a Data Governance Engineer (with GCP / BigQuery) to design and maintain robust data architecture and governance practices within a large organisation. The person in this role will collaborate with business analysts, data stewards and domain experts to define modelling standards, documentation and controls that ensure high-quality, secure, scalable and cost-efficient data solutions on Google Cloud Platform.

Your responsibilities

• Develop and maintain data modelling standards for data warehouse layers, including integrated and analytical layers.
• Design data models and reference architectures optimized for BigQuery, applying partitioning, clustering and query optimisation techniques.
• Lead integration efforts for ingesting and consolidating data from multiple source systems, ensuring consistency and lineage.
• Define and document data governance policies, data dictionaries, metadata standards and lineage documentation in collaboration with data stewards and owners.
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to align business definitions and semantic models with technical implementations.
• Assess and improve data quality controls, implement monitoring and remediation guidance for data issues.
• Work alongside data engineers and implementation teams to deliver efficient, scalable and secure data solutions on GCP.
• Advise on GCP security controls, IAM, encryption, audit trails and access control for data environments.
• Identify cost drivers and recommend optimisation measures for storage, query execution and processing on BigQuery and related services.
• Contribute to governance operating models and role definitions for data owners, data stewards and other governance roles.

Our requirements

• Proven experience in data modelling for data warehouses and analytical layers.
• Experience integrating data from multiple source systems and defining consistent semantic models.
• Practical knowledge of BigQuery modelling best practices and Google Cloud data services.
• Experience in data governance within a large organisation; experience in the financial sector is advantageous but not required.
• Familiarity with data governance concepts including data ownership, stewardship, data dictionaries, metadata and lineage.
• Experience aligning business definitions and data semantics across stakeholders.
• Understanding of data quality issues and approaches to measurement and remediation.
• Experience designing performant, scalable and secure data solutions, including considerations for partitioning, clustering and query optimisation.
• Experience working with engineering teams to operationalise data models and governance standards.
• Knowledge of security topics relevant to GCP: IAM, encryption, auditing and access control.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to translate business requirements into technical data requirements.
