Your responsibilities

The Press and Media Coordinator works under the direct supervision of the Press and Media Specialist. The position has no supervisory responsibilities. Monitors host-country press and media coverage of issues of importance to the U.S. Identifies and advises Mission leadership on strategies for promoting accurate, balanced host-country press and media coverage of U.S. foreign policy and American interests; correcting misinformation and combatting foreign anti-American propaganda and influence operations. Builds productive relationships with press and media professionals in person and online.

Our requirements

All selected candidates must be able to obtain and hold a:

Public Trust certificate.

All selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation and may be subject to a pre-employment medical exam.

Selected candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time 1 MONTH upon receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Education Requirements:

Option 1 & 3 FSN-9/FSN-8: A university degree in Journalism, Communications, International Relations, Political Science, Economics or local equivalent is required.

Option 2 FSN-9: At least 2 years of cellege or university studies.

Option 1 FSN-9: A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a media outlet, think tank, university, NGO, international organization, foreign embassy, government office or corporation is required, with responsibility for public relations, public affairs, journalism, communications, marketing, managing public relations, coordination of press and media events, press conferences, and other media interactions as significant parts of the job.

Option 2 FSN-9: A minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in a media outlet, think tank, university, NGO, international organization, foreign embassy, government office or corporation is required, with responsibility for public relations, public affairs, journalism, communications, marketing, managing public relations, coordination of press and media events, press conferences, and other media interactions as significant parts of the job.

Option 3 FSN-8: A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a media outlet, think tank, university, NGO, international organization, foreign embassy, government office or corporation is required, with responsibility for public relations, public affairs, journalism, communications, marketing, managing public relations, coordination of press and media events, press conferences, and other media interactions as significant parts of the job.

Job Knowledge:

Detailed knowledge of U.S. foreign policy objectives and American interests in the host country, especially as they apply to press and media professionals, outlets and online publications is required. Comprehensive understanding of host-country press/media institutions and professional journalism standards and practices, as well as trends in audience preferences for information consumption (print, TV, radio, online)

Ability to monitor, analyze, and anticipate press, media, and public attitudes across a wide range of policy issues. Strong skills in aligning U.S. foreign policy objectives with host-country perceptions and using Public Diplomacy tools to shape attitudes positively. Ability to advise senior Mission leadership on opportunities and innovative approaches, and to adjust media strategies in response
