About the project
Join our team and you’ll be responsible for providing technical leadership for our Data Platform team, defining technical direction and driving architectural decisions across data, platform and infrastructure domains.
Working in the Data Platform department, you will build scalable, reliable and well-governed data platform capabilities that support analytics, AI and data-driven products used across multiple Stepstone markets and business domains, while collaborating closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers and Enterprise Architects.
Our customers are internal engineering, analytics and product teams across Stepstone. You will help shape the platform capabilities that enable them to build, deploy and operate data-driven solutions at scale.
This is a software engineering leadership role first and foremost, focused on shaping the architecture and evolution of our Data Platform while remaining deeply connected to engineering execution. While our platform is built using technologies such as Python, Java and Scala, we are looking for engineers who have deep expertise in at least one of them and are comfortable making architectural decisions and contributing across multiple technologies when required. We value strong software engineering principles over attachment to a specific language.
You will play a key role in influencing technical strategy, raising engineering standards and helping teams solve complex challenges across the Data Platform domain.
This is so important to us. By joining our team, you will be playing a vital role as together we reimagine the labour market to make it work for everybody.

Your responsibilities
- Define and evolve the technical vision, roadmap and architecture of the Data Platform, driving decisions across data, platform and infrastructure domains.
- Establish engineering standards, best practices and reusable patterns while enabling teams to build scalable, reliable and maintainable platform capabilities.
- Drive engineering excellence by improving code quality, testing, observability, reliability and operational practices across multiple teams.
- Support end-to-end delivery by guiding teams through complex technical challenges, improving technical decision-making and contributing to planning and risk management.
- Mentor engineers, strengthen senior technical capabilities and champion modern engineering tooling, including AI-assisted development and engineering automation.
Our requirements
- Proven experience as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer or in an equivalent senior individual contributor leadership role, with a track record of shaping technical strategy and architecture across multiple teams.
- Strong software engineering background with experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems, data platforms or cloud-native solutions.
- Deep expertise in at least one modern programming language and the ability to work effectively across multiple technologies and technical domains when needed.
- Strong experience with cloud and platform technologies such as AWS, Terraform, Kafka/MSK, Airflow, Spark or related technologies used to build scalable data platforms.
- Knowledge of modern data ecosystems, including data lakes, lakehouse architectures, batch and streaming processing, observability, governance and engineering best practices. Experience with Iceberg, Datadog, DBT or AI-assisted engineering approaches is a plus.
- While this role involves significant technical leadership responsibilities, we expect you to stay close to the code and lead through hands-on engineering work and architectural guidance.
