Safety Critical Software and Hardware Assurance Engineer

Overview

This role offers a range of opportunities to support the UK submarine programme in the area of Software, Control and Instrumentation, working with the Safety Critical Software and Hardware Assurance Engineer within Amentum’s EC&I Engineering Team.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide support to IA&R projects, contracts, and operational teams.
  • Conduct assurance activities related to FPGA and software development for control systems.
  • Review project plans, requirements, design and verification work products to ensure adherence to IEC 61508, DO‑178C, DO‑254 and industry best practice.
  • Represent Amentum at system and software assurance audits and meetings with clients and contractors.
  • Provide formal independent nuclear safety and technical assessment of documents and cyber‑security related issues.
  • Document results in formal letters and present findings to safety and technical committees.
  • Communicate engineering requirements, constraints, and solutions clearly to stakeholders.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work collaboratively with engineering disciplines, quality, safety, and delivery teams.
  • Engage with customers and stakeholders effectively, both verbally and in written form.

Capability Development & Knowledge Sharing

Contribute to knowledge sharing, technical forums, and best‑practice development. Support mentoring and development of graduate and early‑career engineers where appropriate.

Requirements

  • Technical competence and experience in EC&I, software and hardware engineering.
  • Relevant Engineering, Computing or Scientific Degree.
  • Experience with IEC61508, RTCA DO‑178C or RTCA DO‑254.
  • Experience working with programmable hardware or software used in safety or mission‑critical applications such as nuclear or aerospace.
  • Strong awareness of engineering risk, safety and quality requirements.
  • Ability to critically assess complex technical and safety arguments and communicate findings effectively.
  • Ability to work effectively across a matrix organisation.
  • Commitment to professional development and contribution to CoE development.
