About the Opportunity
Amentum is leading a joint venture delivering a Framework Contract for the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), providing intellectual support services to the nuclear decommissioning programme across multiple European sites.
Role Overview
For the JRC Ispra site (Northern Italy), we are seeking Decommissioning Engineers / Managers across multiple experience levels. These roles support JRC in the management of radioactive waste across the decommissioning programme, including waste characterisation, treatment, storage, and compliance with regulatory requirements. These are client-facing positions, providing technical and operational support services rather than direct execution of waste handling activities.
Responsibilities
- Support waste management strategies, coordinate technical activities, and ensure alignment with regulatory and programme requirements.
- Support planning and coordination of decommissioning activities, including development and review of dismantling strategies and methodologies, definition of work sequences and technical approaches, identification of constraints, risks and interfaces.
- Provide technical input into dismantling and cutting techniques, waste generation forecasts and material flows, worksite arrangements, logistics and sequencing.
- Support preparation and review of technical documentation, including decommissioning plans and studies, engineering assessments and technical notes, project and work package documentation.
- Coordinate interfaces across technical disciplines, including waste management, radiation protection, licensing and regulatory compliance. Also coordinate engineering (nuclear and non‑nuclear).
- Support JRC in oversight of decommissioning activities by monitoring progress against plans and deliverables, identifying and managing technical risks and issues, providing technical guidance and recommendations.
- Contribute to project and programme reporting, including progress updates and technical inputs, contribution to dashboards and reports, participation in technical and coordination meetings.
- Operate within a multi-stakeholder environment, supporting coordination between JRC (client), JV partners, subcontractors and technical specialists.
Qualifications
- Experience in nuclear decommissioning or related fields (e.g., nuclear engineering, waste management, radiological environments).
- Experience supporting or delivering technical projects in regulated environments.
- Understanding of decommissioning methodologies and dismantling techniques, waste generation and management during decommissioning, health, safety and radiological considerations.
- Ability to contribute to technical documentation and engineering deliverables.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
- Relevant degree (engineering or related discipline) or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work full‑time on‑site in Ispra, Lombardy (Italy).
- English language proficiency (minimum B2 level).
Desired Experience
- Experience managing decommissioning work packages or technical scopes.
- Experience interfacing with regulators or licensing processes.
- Experience in large‑scale or multi‑project nuclear programmes.
Experience Levels
Junior / early career: up to ~6 years experience; Middle level: typically 6–12 years; Senior level: typically 12–20 years; Expert level: 20+ years. Deployment into specific project roles will depend on experience, qualifications and client approval requirements.
